Hi! Do you already know this point? If you do, you will discover this beautiful diamond crochet stitch that is formed with a trellise of sharp crochets on a double and single crochet base. Also found under the name diamond waffle, is an extraordinary way to learn how to make stitches on stitch posts.
What will you need
You will need:
Follow the instructions
Points used
CH – Current
DC – Double Crochet
FPTC – Treble Post Front Crochet
FPTC2Tog – Front column 2 triple crochet together
Hint: Spin chains count with point!
Step 1: Lines 1 and 2: Configure Lines
Start the diamond crochet stitch with a multiple of 4 + 3 chains, or 4 + 2 if you start with a low stitch.
Row 1: starting on the second hook chain, SC on each chain. If you used a simple crochet base, skip this row.
Row 2: CH 3 for a rotating chain. DC at each point.
Step 2: Row 3: skip stitches and triple crochet the front column
You will notice that several things can happen along the lines of odd patterns when forming the diamond design. The first row is the most complex because you work on the simple low points from the first row. Here’s the scorecard for row 3, but keep reading for more details that are favorable if you’re new to crochet.
Line 3: CH 1 for a rotating chain. FPTC in the third SC in the first row, * skip the point where the FPTC would have worked, SC 3, FPTC2Tog working in the same SC as the first FPTC and in the fourth point. Repeat from * to the last two stitches. FPTC in the same SC as the previous FPTC2Tog. SC at the last point.
After making the chain as your swing chain, find the third low point on the first row. Wrap twice to triple crochet and hook the needle around the third crochet. The post is essentially the vertical part of the stitch, and you’re going to surround the entire stitch. Finish the sharp crochet.
Step 3: Row 3: skip stitch and make high stitches
Make three simple low stitches, skipping the stitch that would be where you worked the FPTC. This will bring you to the point where the corners of the diamond meet.
Step 4: Row 3: Crochet Front Post Two Treble Together
Then it’s time to sharply crochet the two front pole together. To do this, double-wrap and insert the needle in the same crochet stitch as the last FPTC. Crochet sharply to the point where you have two turns on the needle. Do not fill in the TC.
Move to the next three high dots on the first row. Twist wrap and implant the needle around the column of the fourth crochet. Crochet sharply to the point where you have three turns on the needle. Thread and run all three loops to complete the FPTC2Tog.
Step 5: Row 3: skip stitch and make high stitches
Make three simple low stitches, skipping the stitch that would be where you worked the FPTC2Tog.
Step 6: Line 3: Repeat steps 2-6 across the entire line
Copy the 3 steps of the row up to the last two stitches. Make an FPTC at the last low point where you worked with an FPTC2Tog. Make a single crochet in the last stitch.
Step 7: Row 4: Knit double crochets
Line 4: CH 3 for a rotating chain. DC at each point.
Step 8: Row 5: first half of a two front post sharp crochet together
Row 5: CH 1 for a rotating chain. SC 2. * FPTC2Tog working under the first FPTC and the FPTC2Tog cluster from the previous odd row. Skip the point where the FPTC would have worked, SC 3. Repeat from * until the last four points. FPTC2Tog. Skip the point where the FPTC would have worked, SC in the last three points.
This row is very similar to row three, but instead of working each FPTC2Tog around a stitch column, you insert the needle under the sharp crochet of the front column as shown.
Step 9: Row 5: second half of a two front post sharp crochet together
Work the second half of the FPTC2Tog by inserting the hook under the clusters created by each FPTC2Tog from the previous odd row.
Step 10: Row 5: skip a stitch and make single crochets
Upon completing the FPTC2Tog, you will see the first full diamond emerge.
Skip the stitch where this would have worked, do a single crochet three and repeat throughout
the row.
Step 11: Line 5: Repeat steps 8 to 10
After finishing line five, you will see a row of diamonds.
Step 12: Row 6: Knit double crochets
Row 6: CH 3 for a rotating chain. DC at each point.
Step 13: Row 7: Work the front treble column in crochet two together
This line is almost the same as line three, but you work on FPTC2Tog clusters instead of SC posts.
Row 7: CH 1 for a rotating chain. FPTC around the FPTC2Tog cluster from the previous odd row. * skip the point where the FPTC would have worked, SC 3. FPTC2Tog working under the first and second FPTC2Tog clusters from the previous odd row. Repeat from * to the last two stitches. FPTC cluster like the previous FPTC2Tog. SC at the last point.
Step 14: Repeat lines 4-7
Play lines 4-7 to continue the diamond pattern.
For this pattern, we ended up with a single crochet row to complete. You can finish yours however you like, even using it as a wide border and then making the change to a single or double crochet.
It would be awesome to take advantage of this stitch for highly tactile baby blankets or for crocheting kitchen towels or kitchen towels!
